How to Make Your Own Terrarium at Home

To celebrate Earth Day, we hosted our first virtual workshop with participants joining us from around the world. Our founder Denise guided us through building our own Earth Day Terrariums, with supplies that could be foraged or found on Amazon. Couldn’t make it to the workshop? Read on for our guide to building your own terrarium, and be sure to keep an eye out for future virtual classes!

SUPPLY OPTIONS

TERRARIUM:

PLANTS:
Feel free to use plants that you may already have that need a new home taking into account that mini plants will work best - if not, the below links will do the trick and make it easy.  We suggest buying both the plants and airplants

ANOTHER OPTION: TERRARIUM KIT

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Begin with your gravel - you’ll want a layer of around 1/2 an inch.

2. Next add activated charcoal - works to absorb the toxins and promote root rot. Layer it on top of the gravel, around 3/4 of an inch.

3. Time for soil! You’ll use it to create a base for your plants - around 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch.

4. Now for our favorite part - create! Before you begin, consider the layout of your terrarium, you’ll want to consider shape, coupling elements next to each other, and following the rule of thirds. Add soil to cover your plants.

5. Decorate! Add air plants, moss, rocks - anything that will create texture and compliment colors. Be sure to let your terrarium get sun, and mist it once a week. Treat it the same way you would a cactus.
